Cleaner, Greener Kentucky

Sustainability is a big part of everything we do. Here are a few of the ways we’re creating a cleaner, greener Kentucky:

  • Harnessing solar and hydroelectric power to generate clean energy for customers.
  • Leading developments and partnerships in cutting-edge carbon-capture technology and research.
  • Using sheep to keep vegetation in check.
  • Committing to economic development, which has helped generate nearly 100,000 jobs over the last decade.
  • Turning coal by-products into fertilizer.
  • Planting pollinator fields to help our environment.

And more.

Our sustainability commitment is far-reaching and includes:

Carbon capture

Capturing carbon

We’re partnering with the University of Kentucky on a megawatt-scale carbon capture pilot at our E.W. Brown Generating Station, one of the few operational sites in the United States.

E.W Brown pollinator habitat

Growing pollinator habitats

We’re working to establish more than 100 acres of pollinator habitats rich with native plants that create an environment to attract and support pollinators such as native bees, honey bees and monarch butterflies.

Maintaining vegetation sustainably with solar sheep

Have ewe heard about our latest all-natural partnership? A team of woolly cool weed eaters from Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill is keeping the vegetation in check at our E.W. Brown solar facility, the largest of its kind in the state.

Investing in our state’s economic development

We work hard to grow current business and attract new businesses to Kentucky with our competitive electric rates, excellent reliability, and a focus on the customer.

We’ve pledged to electrify 10% of our transportation fleet by 2030 by replacing our end-of-lease light duty vehicles with a combination of fully electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids and outfitting our heavy-duty vehicles with plug-in idle mitigation units. We plan to have around 130 total electric vehicles, which will be a blend of light duty trucks and heavy-duty bucket trucks, which will also be much quieter while idling.

Recycling coal by-product to save big for customers

We recycle over 80% of by-products from coal-fired generation and those efforts has created over $61 million in saving that have been passed onto customers.

We’ve already helped the city of Louisville to reduce its CO2 emissions by 10% and are increasingly adding more solar to further increase our existing renewable generation, which includes two, nearly 100-year-old hydro facilities. And, we’re continuing to explore additional opportunities to add more cost-effective renewable energy sources for our customers.

Using battery storage

We’re collaborating with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) on a large-scale energy storage project at our E.W. Brown Generating Station.

We’re helping protect and restore the peregrine falcon population with nesting boxes at our facilities.

Net-zero carbon emissions goal

As part of our environmental efforts across our generation fleet and throughout our business, our parent company, PPL, has set a goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and is targeting a 70% reduction from 2010 levels by 2035 and an 80% reduction by 2040.
