Taking Care of Your Allergies

Spring has arrived and, for many people, so have sneezing, sniffles and runny nose. With allergy season in full swing, you already may have experienced those tell-tale symptoms — not to mention itchy or watery eyes and headaches. Dust, animal dander and pollen — from grass, trees or flowers — all are common triggers. How do you find relief?

You Can Run but You Can't Hide

Allergy triggers are everywhere. You may not be able to avoid them all, but these tips can help:

  • Stay inside when the pollen count is high.
  • Keep windows closed. Use air-conditioning when you can and change filters often.
  • Vacuum often or use washable rugs on bare floors.
  • Pollen gets in animal fur. If you have pets, bathe them often. Better yet, have someone else bathe them. Don't allow them in your bedroom.
  • Put plastic covers on mattresses and pillows. Use two pillow cases to prevent sweating.

Help for Your Allergies

Some medicines can help relieve your allergies. Your doctor may give you a prescription medicine or you may buy an over-the-counter drug. Always talk to your doctor about using the best medicine for you.

Allergy medications sometimes have side effects. They may make you sleepy or nervous. You may be advised to avoid driving or using machinery. Read the label carefully. Pay close attention to any warnings and follow your doctor's instructions.

Home Care Tips When Allergies Hit

  • Drink lots of water.
  • Avoid smoke and other factors that make you feel worse.
  • When you lie down, keep your head raised on pillows. It will help sinuses drain.
  • Ask your doctor about taking medicine. If it's okay, take it when you first start to feel sick. Don't wait until you feel really bad.
  • Allergies can make you tired. Try to rest.

Talk with your doctor about other steps you can take. Some people may benefit from warm, humid air. Others may do better in a less humid climate. This includes those who are allergic to dust mites or mold. Find out what's best for you.
