Early detection of serious medical conditions is being made in an unexpected place these days — the dental office. Today, an increasing number of dentists have the ability to perform medical diagnoses through routine oral exams. In fact, more than 120 symptoms can now be detected through oral exams, making those regular dental checkups more important than ever.

Some of these medical conditions include:

• Anemia – Indicated by burning, fiery red tongue, inflammation of the corners of mouth or pale gum tissues;
• Diabetes – Indicated by dry mouth, distinctive breath odor, burning tongue, high rate of tooth decay, inflammation and infections in the mouth;
