Plant for the Planet

E.ON U.S.'s Plant for the Planet program is modeled after the United Nations Environment Program's (UNEP) Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign. The purpose of UNEP's tree-planting effort is to bring individuals, communities and businesses together to collectively plant over one billion trees worldwide each year. Similarly, E.ON U.S.'s program is designed to encourage nonprofit organizations with a record of successful tree planting to continue their efforts. The company has designated up to $75,000 each year toward this initiative.

Plant for the Planet grant applications are now available to nonprofit organizations throughout E.ON U.S.'s service territory that are engaged in successful tree-planting programs. The grants are designed to match, dollar-for-dollar, the amount the organization plans to invest in tree planting efforts during the coming year. The application deadline is December 23rd. Approved applicants will be notified in January 2010.

As part of the grant requirements, applicants must describe how their proposed tree planting efforts will support E.ON U.S.'s "Right Tree, Right Place" program, which encourages the planting of mature trees in proper locations to avoid power lines to reduce the potential of power outages. Information about Right Tree, Right Place, is available as well.
