KU Celebrates Earth Day with Tree Seedling Giveaway April 20 at London Office
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky Utilities Company will join other local Earth Day activities around the state by giving away 1,000 Redbud tree seedlings on April 20th, at the London business office at 611 Meyers Baker Road.
Customers may pick up two free seedlings beginning at about 8 a.m. until the seedling supply lasts, usually until late morning. Mature redbuds have pink/purple blossoms in the early spring and dot rural landscapes in Kentucky during this time of the year.
The giveaway program supports KU's advice on planting trees...The Right Tree, the Right Place.
Planting the right tree in the right place allows the tree to properly grow without limbs reaching electric lines, which reduces the possibility of outages. A brochure that describes Right Tree-Right Place and Plan Before You Plant will be given to customers along with the seedlings.
Falling tree limbs on lines is one of the major causes of power outages. Planting the seedlings in the proper location also can provide shade for houses which, over the long term, will help reduce energy costs.
KU's tree seedling giveaway program started in the early 1990s and over that time, nearly 200,000 seedlings have been given to customers across KU's service territory.
